Reolink Argus 2E overview

The Reolink Argus 2E is a Wire-Free IP camera that works with a battery or solar panel. It uses a 2.4 GHz WiFi network to transmit 1080p Full HD videos captured with its 120° wide viewing angle lens.

This camera uses a PIR sensor that triggers people and animal motion detection and stars recording on a micro SD card or into the Reolink cloud.

There are a microphone and speaker for two-way audio communication and an intern siren to scare intruders close to the camera.

You can use this camera indoors or outdoors to monitor your home and receive push notifications and email alerts directly on your mobile phone.

•  Switch the lateral power button to turn it on;
• Open the Reolink app on your smarphone;
• Click the (+) button to add a new camera;
• Scan the QR code in the back of the camera;

• Finish the setup.

Video quality

The camera video quality is very good.

The picture below shows the camera on an indoor installation at daytime.

As you can see, the video quality is impressive.

The Reolink app is very simple and intuitive. You can use the icon at the top right to turn the sirene on and off, the other one to (square tile) to change the number os camera is displayed simulteously.

At the botton you can pause the video, enable audio, take screenshots, record video on your mobile, change the resolution and see the camera in full screen.

The camera has an internal rechargeable battery that can be monitored via the Reolink app. You need to use a 2.4HGz band Wi-Fi network for the camera connection.  (5GHZ is not available in this model).

You can enable and disable the PIR sensor, camera recording and push notification.

I't's also possible to setup email alerts and share the camera with other people.

Amcrest webcam overview

The Amcrest 1080P Webcam has a CMOS 1/3 sensor and a 3.6mm lens to capture FullHD video with a 70º field of view. There are a built-in microphone and a mount to put the camera on a laptop or a tripod. 

The camera can be connected to a MAC or Windows computer via USB cable, and it's plug and play, which means it works without any extra configuration. 

Compatibility: Skype, Youtube, Yahoo Messenger, MSN, Zoom, Windows Live Messager, Gmail, WeChat and other instant messaging applications.

A privacy cover is available in the kit to allow you to block the camera lens.

It's pretty simple. Here you have all you need to get started.

The camera installation is straightforward.

Just use the articulate arm to place the camera on the top of your laptop.

The Amcrest webcam video quality

The camera video quality is good for conference calls, classes, and meetings and can be used with the most popular software such as Skype and Zoom.

I just connected my camera to the USB port, opened Zoom, and it was there

There's a wide-angle lens that allows seeing more of the room.

It's suitable for video calls with more people or to show something in the background. Due to the type of lens used, the face shows up more slim on the camera, but the image gets a little bit darker compared to other cameras.

As a comparison, take a look at the picture below that shows the video from the buit-in camera's laptop working on zoom

As you can see, the Amcrest Webcam has better contrast and shows more shadow details. The image doesn't look flat as the one from the built-in camera.

It's a question of preference, but you can be more creative with the Amcrest webcam by changing the camera and light position to play with the shadows.

With a wider field of view, the edges appear rounded on the video (see the door frame), but that's a principle of optics, and the camera is not the one to blame

Audio is essential for conference calls and meetings.

Unfortunately, the audio in this camera is a bit quiet and muffled.

I tested the Amcrest webcam's audio with the (Windows) settings on 100%,

In my opinion, the audio is a little bit quiet  but still good enough for video calls.

Play the audio below to listen to a comparison between the Amcrest and the laptop's built-in camera mic. The mics are using the same Windows settings.

Laptoo built-in mic: 18 to 34 s

The picture below shows the audio wave for the Amcrest camera.

As you can see, the audio peak is -18dB, which is a little bit quiet for conversation.

The audio peak is around -10dB for the laptop's built-in camera, which is good enough for a conversation without clipping the audio.

Even if I shout during a conversation during my tests, both microphones won't clip or distort the audio, but the laptop's built-in mic still gets clearer audio.

If you are camera shy and want some privacy during a chat, it's possible to mute your camera on the software you are using, but sometimes you just forget to do that or are afraid somebody could still see your camera, right?

OK, you use the camera's cover to block the camera.

It comes in the package, and it's easy to install; just stick it to the camera lens.

Yeah. With the cover, your privacy is 100% protected.

As I said before, the video from the Amcrest webcam has better contrast and allows you to have an overall better video quality as long as you have some way to control the light in the environment.

I had a small issue with my room's lights and got some horizontal black bars rolling in the video. But don't worry, the camera is not the one to blame.

The problem is related to the light frequency which causes this effect on cameras that don't have a flicker elimination feature. I have the same problem with other cameras, and I could solve that by just changing the types of lights I'm using.

The picture below shows the rolling horizontal bars.

Since there's no camera configuration to eliminate the flicker, I changed the room's type of lights, and the problem disappeared.

I chose this model on Amazon, and I liked the price, so I decided to give it a try.

You can find bundles with two or three switches; I purchase only one just to make sure it would work the way I expected, so later I could buy extra ones

Wi-Fi Smart Light Switch Overview

The product comes in a beautiful box that says you can use smartphones to turn lights and fans on and off from anywhere. You can also set a schedule and use Alexa and Google Assistant to command the appliances with your voice.

I like the idea that it's possible to use Alexa and Google just because I have other smart devices in my apartment that are paired with both of them.

The switch is a little bit larger than the normal (just a tiny bit), and the wall the plate measures 5 x 3.25 inches, compared to a standard 4.5 x 2.75 inches.

The way you turn the switch ON and OFF completley changes because there's only on position to for both operations and it takes some time to get used to it.

After the installation and setup, you can press the switch to turn it on and off, use the smartphone or command voice to control your lights.

In the dark, it's possible to see the LED, which makes it easier to locate the switch.

There's also an LED that indicates the Wi-Fi signal and connection status.

Using the Kasa App to control the lights

The Kasa app is easy to install and use; you just need to open the Playstore, download, install (if you don't have it yet), and follow the step-by-step setup.

After the setup, you can see the smart Wi-Fi switch available with the icon to indicate the light status. Just press the icon to turn the lights on and off.

It's also possible to schedule the lights to turn on and off and 

The Kasa app is easy to use and intuitive; you can add other devices to the list.

Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco M2 for CCTV

On the right side, there's the Ubiquiti radio receiver connected to a switch that is connected to a monitoring station and an NVR (Network Video Recorder).

It's simple; you just need to use both radios in bridge mode, which means they transparently transmit the data back and forth between both locations.

It's necessary to buy at least a pair of radios to have a sytem working properly.

Some sellers send the radio pre-configured, so you just need to install them, connect the UTP cables, and point to each other.(that was not my case).

Don't worry if you don't get a pre-configured pair, the setup is very easy.

The box brings the Ubiquiti radio, a cable tie wrap that is used to install the radio on a pole, a power cord, the power supply and a quick guide.

The power supply has two Ethernet ports; one of them is labeled PoE, which is used to power the radio via a UTP cable, and it's also used for data traffic. The LAN port is used to connect to the switch, router, or any other network device.

The UTP cables don't come in the box, and you need to buy for yourself.

You can use the bracket located in the back of the radio to mount it on a pole.

Yes, the wiring is straightforward, just connect the UTP cable from the Radio LAN port to the power supply PoE port and the power supply LAN port to a switch.

It's very easy, isn't it?

The next step is connect the power cable to the power supply.

And it's done. time to turn the system on...

The Ubiquiti NanoStation Interface

You can use a computer or laptop to have access to the Radio's menu via a web browser. The Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco M2 default IP address is 192.168.1.20.

The default username/ password are  ubnt/ubnt.

Make sure you have your computer's IP address in the same network range to have access to the radio for the initial setup, and then you can change it.

The picture below shows the radio web interface.

After the first login a pop message shows up to alert you to change the password.

In the main tab, it's possible to see some information such as the CPU and memory usage, the Network mode (bridge), the SSID, Channel width, and signal strength.

Radio basic configuration

The Wireless tab allows you to choose the mode you want to operate.

If you want to keep it simple, choose the mode and don't touch any other configuration because, most of the time, you don't need to do that.

You can also enable the security and choose a password to connect to the radio.

The network tab allows you to change the Network Mode and the IP Address.

That's basically what you have to change without messing up with other configurations, so change the IP address according to your network configuration, chose the operation mode, and set the password on both radios.

I've connected the Ubiquiti NanoStation radios to my IP cameras to send a video stream to my computer/recorder, and it's working fine with a total of 4 cameras.

A Quick Overview

My idea was to connect my laptop to a TV and use it as an inexpensive smartboard by interacting with the screen using my fingers to open and use applications such as the PowerPoint on the Microsoft Windows 10.

I got the infrared iframe from Amazon and had a hard time trying to assembly it but finally, I could make it work on my TV and tested to see if it was good enough for my particular application. Unfortunately, it was not.

You don't need to stop reading just because it wasn't what I expected.

Product delivery

About one week after the purchase, the infrared touch overlay arrived disassembled.

It didn't come in a square box but inside a thick a PVC pipe. that was a surprise

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the PVC pipe but just imagine a thick pipe that can carry the aluminum bars that are used to assemble the frame.

What is the box

The package contains 4 aluminum bars, corner mounts, mounting screws, a USB cable, and the double side tape to stick the frame to the TV.

The technology behind the infrared touch screen overlay is an array of LEDs that spread that laser beams over the display and when they are interrupted, the system "knows" where your fingers are.

The picture below shows one of the bars with the LEDs inside.

I've heard that this technology doesn't work well if you use the monitor outdoors under sunlight because the extra light messes up with the sensitivity.

How to assembly the infrared touch screen overlay

That was the hard part. The manual that comes in the package sucks, the information is a bad Chinese to English translation and the pictures are in low resolution.

Just in case you already got one of these infrared touch frames, here you are going to find better pictures and information to assemble it.

There are Flat Ribbon cables attached to the end of the bars that are labeled B and D so you need to be careful to not break them while assembling.

The other sides (A and C) are not attached to the other bars at first but side A comes with a Flat Ribbon cable and a USB cable as shown in the picture.

The Flat Ribbon Cable from the side A needs to be connected to the other bar that is also labeled A as shown in the picture below.

The picture below shows the infrared frame on the table, the way I organized it before start assembling it. See how the end of each bar is labeled and must be positioned to match the same letters.

I found out that this is the best way to organize the frame.

The labels are facing up and the side A is already with its Flat Ribbon Cable connected. Not it's time to use the mounting corners to hold all the bars together.

Use the screws that come in the package to attach the bars as shown below.

Note that you must put the mounting corner in the right position, take a look at the picture again to see the details on how to use this piece.

Place the frame on the TV

After finishing the frame you have to place it on the border of your TV.

Don't use the double-sided tape yeat, just test it it's working before moving to the next stage, and if you are sure you liked then use the tape to hold the frame.

As you can see, I just positioned the frame on the TV even without the final protection for the corners. The idea was to test it out before have it 100% ready.

Connect the USB cable from the frame to a laptop and you are done.

That's what I did and then I opened the Windows Paint Brush to start drawing using my finger. It works with up to 10 fingers at the same time

At first, everything was working fine but then I noticed that the precision was not that good, so I decided to calibrate it.

Testing the infrared touch screen overlay

The calibration process is done via windows, you just need to open the control panel and select "Tablet and PC Settings" to open the calibration window.

The calibration software shows 4 calibration points you have touch following the instructions that shows up. After this process the precision improves a bit.

This process is a little bit annoying and sometimes you have to touch several times in the same calibration point because the software keep asking you to do that.

Pros and cons

Here are my observations

The Good

Price: This is an expensive device that can turn your TV into a giant tablet.

Touch-points: With 10 touch points you can use all your fingers at the same time.

The bad

Manual: Horrible manual, with bad translation and low-res pictures.

Precision: The precision is not good enough to touch small objects on the screen.

Response: Sometimes it fails to respond the touch and fails a little bit.

Mount: I didn't like the idea to stick tape on my TV.

Technical support: There's no technical support team you can talk to.

Conclusion

OK, this is an infrared touch screen overlay review and probably you expect me to say that is good and worth the price, right? Well, unfortunately, I didn't keep it.

This device is not bad but at the end of the day it didn't meet my expectations.

I think it will make me nervous with the lack of precision and response, I don't want to keep touching several times on the screen to get a response during a presentation.

Please don't get me wrong, this device could be useful for other people, and in fact, I think it is because Amazon keeps selling them, so there are buyers out there.

I know I'm talking about expend much more money, but I think I will be much happier with this new equipment. I didn't get yet, but soon I will order it.
