How to factory reset a Reolink camera

Make sure you have a PoE switch and a UTP patch cord (network cable).

The PoE switch is used to power the camera, but you can also use a regular power supply if you have a non-PoE switch. Either way you also need a connection to the router to allow the camera to receive a new IP during the setup (after the reset).

Here's the step-by-step to reset the camera.

• Press and hold the reset button;
• Connect the camera to power;
• Keep holding the button for 10 seconds;
• Release the button.

I have two Reolink Duo Wi-Fi cameras in my lab, and I tested the procedure before writing this article, so rest assured because this is the real deal.

The process also works with the different Reolink models such as the 4G and PoE.

How to reset the Reolink Duo Cameras

The first thing you need to do to reset your Reolink Duo camera is to find the reset button that is located under the micro SD card slot cover.

Just grab a Phillips screwdriver, open the cover, and you will see the button.

Make sure the camera is connected to the power supply before resetting it.

• Open the micro SD card cover
• Insert the reset need into the reset hole
• Press the reset button and hold it for 10 seconds
• Release the button
• Wait until you hear beeps, that sound that reminds a "sonar".

It takes some time after releasing the button until you hear the sonar-like sound.

Please just be patient and wait for one to two minutes until the camera reboots.

The camera will reset to the factory default settings and get ready for setup.

The Reolink Duo reset procedure is very simple but sometimes a little bit tricky.

After holding the reset button for 10 seconds, I didn't see any indication that the procedure was successful, so I waited for about two minutes to get the sound confirmation. Make sure you also wait for some time.

"Factory default succeded, please release the reset button".

After releasing the button you may hear a second message:

"Camera has started up, please run Reolink App, add the camera and set it up".

And it's finished, now you can use the Reolink app to add the camera again.

Yes, I will show you how to  install the Reolink app on the Fire TV Stick.

Let's see how I got mine working.

The Reolink app is available for Android and iOS devices, and you can install it on your Fire TV Stick as well. You just need to download and install an APK file.

OK. I don't need to get too technical here, so I will just let you know that APK stands for Android Package Kit, and it's the file format that Android uses for its apps, and we will use the same type of file for our Reolink app installation.

Here are the steps to install the Reolink app on your Fire TV Stick.

• Install the Downloader App on your TV Fire Stick;
• Download and install the Reolink App APK;
• Lauch the Reolink App and login to the camera.

Yes, it that simple.

Navigate to the APKmirror website

On the left side of the screen, click on "Browser".

Click on the search box and type "https/www.apkmirror.com".

Once you are on the APK mirror website, search for the Reolink App.

Click the Reolink app and look for the "Download APK" button.

Install the Reolink App

After clicking the button, the App is downloaded and installed automatically.

Launch the App

You can click the "Open" button or go to the Application menu to launch the App.

Agree with the Terms of Service

Here you need to accept the Terms of services by clicking a button.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to navigate to the button with the Fire TV control.

Login to the camera

Finally, log in to your Reolink camera.

And here you have your Reolink on Fire TV Stick.

You can use the Reolink App to connect to the cameras or an NVR.

If you are using an NVR, you will be able to see all of your cameras on the screen.

Advantages of the Reolink app on a Fire TV Stick

OK. You can add your Reolink cameras to Alexa and use a voice command to display them on your TV, right?  As you may know, this process is very easy.

So, you may be wondering, "why install the Reolink App to a Fire TV Stick?"

The answer is simple, the video loads fast and doesn't depend on the Internet.

As long as the Reolink cameras are connected to the local WiFi router, they can find them in the local network even without an Internet connection.

If you use the voice command to ask Alexa, it takes around 12s to display the video on the TV, and it can't last longer than 10 minutes on the screen, but this is no longer a limitation when using the Reolink App on Firestick.

Other ways to display Reolink cameras on TV

There are different ways you can see your Reolink cameras on TV.

As I mentioned before, you can use Alexa connected to the Reolink App or use alternative Apps such as TinyCam or IP Camera Viewer.

The Reolink Argus 2E is a Wire-Free IP camera that works with a battery or solar panel. It uses a 2.4 GHz WiFi network to transmit 1080p Full HD videos captured with its 120° wide viewing angle lens.

Video quality

The camera video quality is very good.

The picture below shows the camera on an indoor installation at daytime.

As you can see, the video quality is impressive.

Reolink app

The Reolink app is very simple and intuitive. You can use the icon at the top right to turn the sirene on and off, the other one to (square tile) to change the number os camera is displayed simulteously.

At the botton you can pause the video, enable audio, take screenshots, record video on your mobile, change the resolution and see the camera in full screen.

Reolink Argus 2 features

The camera has an internal rechargeable battery that can be monitored via the Reolink app. You need to use a 2.4HGz band Wi-Fi network for the camera connection.  (5GHZ is not available in this model).

You can enable and disable the PIR sensor, camera recording and push notification.

I't's also possible to setup email alerts and share the camera with other people.

The fail to login message

You can usually see a message like "login failed, connection failed or timeout" when trying to view the cameras via the Reolink client software.

If that's the case, please follow these steps:

• Make sure you are using the correct password;
• Check if the computer's firewall is not blocking the traffic ;
• Test the network connection between the devices;
• Double-check the camera IP address and UID

Check the username and password

Most of the time, the login failed message is related to the use of the username and password. You must check if there are no wrong characters or spaces in the credentials you are trying to use to log in.

It's very common to confuse the number "1" with the letter "l" or the number "0" (zero) with the letter "O" or type the wrong special character that demands the combination of the "shift key" and a number.

Passwords with extra spaces are also the cause of failed login attempts.

The Reolink client login failed message is also very common when the computer's firewall blocks the communication between the devices in the network.

During the installation, the firewall prompts a confirmation if you want to allow the software to communicate in the network, you must answer "Yes" to that.

The picture below shows an example of a Reolink camera and a laptop connected to the same router on a local network.

The IP range must be the same to the computer/laptop can reach the camera.

If the camera IP or the UID is not correct, you will see a message that indicated fails to connect. Make sure the information you enter during the setup is accurate.

Depending on the camera model you either use the IP or UID.

The picture below show the UID for a Reolink Argus PT camera.

Usually, the UID is accurate when you use the software to scan the LAN, but if you type it manually, it's better to double-check if it's correct.

It doesn't matter which type of camera you have connected to the network, they follow the same technical standards, and you need to know how to deal with them to troubleshoot communication problems.

The software scans the network but can't find the camera, and there are different reasons the camera is not visible; let's talk about them.

Possible causes for the problem

Here's a list of problems that can prevent the software from finding the camera.

1. The camera is not powered on;
2. The computer and camera are not connected to the same network;
3. There's a firewall blocking the communication;
4. The camera or software is not updated.

Let's discuss what are the solution for each case.

The camera is not powered on

Make sure the camera has power, you can check if the LED status is ON.

You can also use the Reolink app to check if you can have access to the live video.

The devices are not connected to the same network

To be able to communicate, the camera and computer with the Reolink client software must be connected to the same network and use IP addresses that are in the same network range. See the picture below for more detail.

Assuming the initial setup was done in this network, the router should give the camera an IP address in the same range as the laptop and the mobile.

Here's an example of the IP address scheme.

Your network is probably different, but this example illustrates how the devices must have the same IP address range represented by 192.168.1.x in this case.

Every device receives an IP from the router, which is the gateway to the Internet.

Check your devices to see if they are connected to the same router and have similar IP addresses as you see in this example, 

A firewall is blocking the communication

If a firewall in your computer/laptop blocks the communication between the devices, the Reolink client won't be able to find the camera.

Check your firewall and create a rule to allow the data communication between the computer and the Reolink camera.

The camera or software are not updated

Sometimes an old version of the software or camera firmware can lead to some communication problems, so make sure you have the latest firmware in the camera and visit the Reolink Website to update the client software.

There's a version for Windows and other for MAC, choose the one you need.

Download the file, double click it and follow the  installation wizard.

Now it's time to add a camera to the software.

Click the button "Scan Device in LAN".

The computer with the software and the camera must be connected to the same network. After finding the camera, click on it, give it a name, input the username and password and click the "OK"button.

Each camera has a unique UID to register with the software.

If you add a battery-powered camera such as the Argus, a message should appear to warn you about the battery duration.

Click "Yes" to close the window and check the camera in the software.

The QR code scanning problem

Sometimes the Reolink camera won't scan the QR code just because the mobile phone's display brigthtess is reduced too much. 

That's exactly what happened to me. I don't know the Reolink App changes the brightness; perhaps it's a bug that will be fixed in the future, or maybe it occurs only with some smartphones.

Anyway, the quick solution is to grab a copy of the QR code as a picture, which immediately solves the problem.

The picture below shows an example of the QR code darkened by the Reolink App.

You can easily fix the problem by taking a screenshot to have a brightened version of the QR code so the camera can read it correctly.

For Android phones (such as my Samsung Galaxy S8+) press and hold the ON/OFF and the volume down buttons at the same time and wait for a second. 

Now you can proceed with the setup and the camera will read the QR code.

Just follow the steps from the Reolink app wizard.

The way you can take a screenshot varies depending on the type of smartphone or setup you are using, but I think you got the idea and can figure it out, right?

Other problems with the Reolink QR Code 

The smartphone screen is cracked

If your smartphone has a cracked screen (yeah, unfortunately, that happens), the Reolink camera won't read the QR code even if it's brighter. 

You can take a screenshot and send it to yourself via email, or whatever means you have to share the picture to a computer or other smartphone.

The camera lens is dirty or obstructed

Ensure the lens in the Reolink camera is not covered; it's clean before trying to read the QR code. Sometimes you  just miss those little details.

Update the Reolink App

Check the Playstore or Android store for a new version of the Reolink App.

Sometime an update is everything you need to fix the problem.
