Using the Wyze Cam without WiFi. Yeah, this is that possible.
In this article, I show how you use the camera even without a WiFi router.
The Wyze camera works without the Internet as long as you work on the setup first and disconnect it from the WiFi and use a micro SD card for recording.
You just need to power the camera up and place it into the position to record what you want. That's cool, isn't?
There are some details you need to understand first to make it work.
How to use the Wyze Cam without Internet
Just set up the Wyze Cam to record into a micro SD card and you are good to go.
It looks too simple, right? In fact, it is, but there's a small catch...
You need to remove the micro SD card from the camera and insert it into a card adapter to read it on your computer or laptop. That's not practical.
As you can see in the pictures below, the camera records everything in the card and organize the footage in folders with dates and even hour.
The files are pretty organized, see the example below that shows the folder named record which contains files from 11-03-2020 on every hours.
(You just need to read backward to figure out the date)
The picture below shows the video files in .mp4 which can be played on any regular computer with software such as windows media player or VLC.
And that's the way you can use your Wyze Cam without the Internet.
How to watch live video without Internet
You may be wondering, how on earth it's possible to watch live video from the Wyze Camera if there's no Internet available and the camera can't connect to the streaming servers. But wait, I have a workaround for that.
You can make the camera stream to a computer using the RTSP protocol.
Yeah, you need to use a WiFi router to make it work but you don't necessarily need to have a connection to the Internet. It's a reasonable solution and it works.
The picture below shows the Wyze Camera streaming to the VLC software which is installed on a laptop connected to a local network.
As long as the Wyze camera and the computer are connected to the same WiFi router and have their IP (given by the router), you have a local network up and running, which allows you too set up this type of solution.
That is a topic of another article I have on this blog.
If you are interested in making this solution works just click the link below:
Conclusion
You can make your Wyze Cam work without WiFi by recording on an SD card or make it work without the Internet by connecting it to a local network.
In the first case, (using an SD card) you don't need WiFi at all, and in the second case, at least a WiFi router is necessary even if an Internet link is not available.
I hope this article can help you to set up your camera the way you want.
